Tesla FSD Referral Fine Print (2026): Why Most Referrals Never Pay the Referrer

TL;DR

  • Tesla’s new FSD referral only pays the referrer if the friend subscribes during their one-month trial. Subscribe a day after it ends and the referrer gets nothing.
  • Your friend has to be an existing Tesla owner who hasn’t paid for FSD, owned it, or used any FSD trial in the past 12 months. That rules out most recent buyers.
  • Even when it works, the reward is one month of FSD or a $99 Tesla Credit, capped at 12 a year. Tesla also dropped rewards for car purchases in the same refresh.

Tesla rebuilt its U.S. referral program on October 29 and 30, 2026. The headline is friendly: gift a friend a free month of FSD (Supervised), get a month back. The fine print is where it gets tight. For a referrer to actually see that month or the $99 credit, several things have to line up, and the biggest one is timing.

We covered the basics in how to gift a free month and get one back. This is the part the announcement skips.

When does a Tesla FSD referral count in 2026?

Only when your friend starts a paid FSD (Supervised) subscription before their free month runs out. Tesla’s FSD referral support page says it twice:

“Referrer benefits are earned when your referral recipient subscribes to FSD (Supervised) during their trial.”

“If they subscribe to FSD (Supervised) during the trial, you will earn your referrer benefit.”

Tesla’s main Refer and Earn page uses the same wording: “If they subscribe to FSD (Supervised) during their trial, you can earn referral benefits.”

The gap nobody mentions

Think about how people actually use a free trial. Some take the free month and walk away. Some love it and subscribe on day 25. And some finish the month, think it over, and subscribe in February when a road trip comes up.

That last group is the problem. They became paying FSD customers because of your link, but the support page ties the reward to subscribing during the trial. Nothing in Tesla’s published wording credits a referrer for a subscription that starts after the trial ends.

Tip for referrers: if your friend is on the fence, a quick note before day 30 is the difference between a reward and nothing. They can subscribe and cancel later; Tesla’s rule is about when they subscribe.

Who can use a Tesla FSD referral link?

This is the second filter. The friend has to already own or lease a registered Tesla. Car shoppers don’t qualify. Tesla’s referral legal terms define an eligible referee in four parts, and the support page adds the hardware and grant rules:

Your friend…Can they use your link?Where it says so
Owns or leases a registered Tesla with FSD-compatible hardwareYes, requiredTesla support page
Has FSD (Supervised) right now, by subscription or outright purchase on that carNot eligibleTesla legal terms
Paid for an FSD subscription in the last 12 monthsNot eligibleTesla legal terms
Redeemed any FSD trial in the last 12 months, including the one at deliveryNot eligibleTesla legal terms
Holds FSD through a one-year complimentary grantNot eligibleTesla support page

Why recent buyers are locked out

New Teslas often come with an FSD trial at delivery. Tesla’s terms count “any FSD (Supervised) trial or promotion provided by Tesla at or around vehicle delivery” toward the 12-month window, per the legal terms. So the friend who just took delivery and loved their trial can’t take your link for about a year.

The same goes for anyone who subscribed for a road trip in the last 12 months and cancelled. Not subscribed today isn’t enough.

Who can send a referral?

  • You pay for FSD (Supervised) monthly, or you bought it outright. (Tesla support)
  • You’re not on a one-year complimentary FSD grant. Grant holders can’t refer. (Tesla support)
  • You’re on Tesla app 4.62.0 or later, in the U.S. (Electrek)

What the referrer actually gets

  • FSD subscribers: one free month of FSD (Supervised).
  • Outright FSD owners: a $99 Tesla Credit toward eligible purchases.
  • Cap: up to 12 rewards per calendar year. (Tesla support)
  • Expiry: rewards show as pending until the Grant Date, and Tesla Credits expire 12 months after it. (Refer and Earn)

Per BC Tesla Guy’s read of the full legal terms, there’s also a 48-reward lifetime cap, and each accepted trial uses one of your 12 yearly trial slots whether or not the friend subscribes. Check the terms yourself before you plan around it.

What changed in the refresh: car referrals vs FSD referrals

The other half of the story: Tesla’s Refer and Earn terms no longer list any vehicle as a qualifying purchase, so buying a Tesla through a friend’s link now earns neither person anything, Electrek reported on October 30. The referral program moved from rewarding car sales to rewarding FSD subscriptions.

Is it still worth sharing your link?

Yes, with the right expectations. Your friend gets a free month of FSD (Supervised) on their own roads either way, and that costs you nothing. Just don’t count on the reward. It only lands when an eligible owner subscribes inside a one-month window.

Best candidates: owners on HW3 or HW4 cars who have never tried FSD, or haven’t touched it in over a year. Check which build their car gets on our FSD version tracker, and see how the trial itself works on our FSD trial page. If you rent Teslas, our FSD on Turo guide covers the other new way people are trying it.

FSD (Supervised) requires an attentive driver ready to take over at all times. It does not make the car autonomous. GetTesla receives $99 in Tesla Credits only if you subscribe during a trial started from our link.
