Best for
Buy the Model Y if
- Families. Five seats as standard, seven as an option on Premium AWD, or six with real third-row legroom in Model Y L.
- Anyone who loads the car from the back: strollers, dogs, bikes, flat-pack furniture. The hatch and flat floor make it a small van.
- Road trips. A 15-minute Supercharger stop adds well over 100 miles, and the ride height clears rough parking lots.
Look elsewhere
Think twice if
- Every dollar counts. The Model 3 Standard is $3,000 less and goes further per kilowatt-hour.
- You tow more than 3,500 pounds. That is the Model Y's limit with the tow package; Cybertruck starts at 7,500.
- You want the quickest car. Model 3 Performance is faster and cheaper than Model Y Performance.

Which Model Y seats seven?
The Model Y Premium All-Wheel Drive can be optioned with a two-seat third row for seven total. It is a compact bench best suited to children. For adult-sized third-row space, Model Y L offers six seats in a 2+2+2 layout with 31.2 inches of third-row legroom.
Model Y or Model 3: which should I buy?
Buy the Model Y if you carry passengers, cargo or pets regularly, want a hatch, or need all-wheel drive on a budget. Buy the Model 3 if you mostly drive alone or as a couple and want the lowest price and longest range. Trim for trim, the Model Y costs about $3,000 more and gives up 5–10% of range.
How much can a Model Y tow?
Up to 3,500 pounds with Tesla's tow package. Expect range to fall sharply when towing near that limit.
Does the Model Y qualify for the federal tax credit?
No. The federal clean-vehicle credit ended for vehicles delivered after September 30, 2025. Some states and utilities still offer rebates, which the total cost of ownership calculator includes for the larger programs.
