Early fall is one of the best times to take a Tesla road trip: temperatures are mild enough that you won’t lose much range to cabin heating, and the Supercharger network is bigger than it’s ever been. Here’s how to plan one, and what to expect once the weather cools further.
Let the car plan the stops
Enter your destination in the touchscreen or the Tesla app, and Trip Planner builds Supercharger stops into your route automatically, factoring in your driving style, elevation, outside temperature, and current charge. When you’re navigating to a Supercharger, the car also preconditions its battery ahead of time so it’s at the right temperature to charge quickly when you arrive — you don’t have to do anything for that to happen. Tesla’s guidance is available on its Trip Planner page for mapping out a route before you leave.
The network has grown a lot
Finding a charger along the way is easier than it used to be. Tesla’s Supercharger network reached roughly 8,700 stations and more than 82,000 stalls worldwide as of Q2 2026, with over 3,200 of those stations in the US. On most interstate corridors you’re rarely more than a short detour from one.
What changes as it gets colder
Range holds up well in fall weather. At around 50°F, EVs typically retain about 92% of their normal range, since the battery itself only loses a little efficiency in cool-but-not-cold conditions. The bigger drop comes later in the year: once temperatures fall toward freezing, running the cabin heater becomes the dominant factor in range loss, not the battery. If you’re planning a trip for late fall or winter, build in a bit more charging buffer than Trip Planner’s default suggests, especially on short hops where the heater runs the whole way.

Charge to 100% the morning you leave for a road trip rather than your usual daily limit, and let Trip Planner route you rather than second-guessing it — it’s already accounting for the same variables you’d otherwise have to track by hand.
