Pennsylvania’s EV rebate program is closed. Here’s what still helps a Tesla buyer.
If you’re buying a Tesla in Pennsylvania, don’t count on a state rebate to bring the price down. Pennsylvania’s Alternative Fuel Vehicle Rebate program is closed, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, which states plainly on its rebate page: “The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Rebate Program is closed.”
The state hasn’t said why the program closed or when it might reopen. That matters for your budget either way: if you were counting on this rebate to help pay for a Model 3 or Model Y, it’s off the table for now.
What the rebate used to cover
While it was active, Pennsylvania’s program paid a $3,000 rebate on new battery-electric vehicles, up from $2,000 in prior years, plus an additional $1,000 for low-income applicants, per the DEP. Plug-in hybrids qualified for a $1,500 rebate, and other alternative-fuel vehicles and electric motorcycles qualified for $500. Applicants had to submit paperwork through the state’s eGrants system within six months of buying the vehicle.
The DEP page doesn’t specify whether Tesla models were excluded from past rounds, but battery-electric vehicles broadly qualified, which would have included Tesla’s lineup.
What still helps a Tesla buyer in Pennsylvania
The federal purchase credit that used to apply to new and used EVs is gone too — it stopped applying to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so it isn’t available as a fallback here. With both the state rebate and the federal credit off the table, your best remaining option is checking directly with your electric utility. Utility-run rebates for home EV charger installation are separate from the DEP’s vehicle rebate, aren’t affected by its closure, and vary by provider, so it’s worth a direct call or a look at your utility’s website rather than assuming there’s nothing left.
If you’re partway through ordering a Tesla and were budgeting around the state rebate, it’s worth rechecking the DEP page before delivery in case the program reopens with new funding, since these state programs sometimes pause and restart within the same fiscal year rather than ending for good.
