Texas’s EV purchase rebate is closed. Here’s what that means if you’re buying a Tesla.
If you’re buying a Tesla in Texas and hoping for a state rebate on top of any manufacturer incentive, there isn’t one right now. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Light-Duty Motor Vehicle Purchase or Lease Incentive Program (LDPLIP) — the state’s rebate for new electric and alternative-fuel vehicles — is listed as “Currently Closed” on the agency’s own program page, as of this writing.
What the program covered while it was open
LDPLIP offered a rebate of up to $2,500 for new electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, available to anyone who purchased or leased an eligible vehicle in Texas on or after September 1, 2025. It applied to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, which covers every current Tesla model, and rebates were awarded first-come, first-served while state funding lasted.
Why it matters if you’re ordering now
TCEQ’s page doesn’t publish a reopening date; it directs buyers to its TERP email list for updates rather than promising a timeline. That leaves Texas Tesla buyers without a state purchase incentive for now, on top of the federal clean vehicle tax credit, which the IRS confirms ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Before you factor any rebate into your Tesla budget, check the LDPLIP page directly — state funding programs like this one tend to open and close with little notice, and a program that’s closed today can reopen with a new funding round later.
What that leaves on the table
Without a state purchase rebate or the federal credit, Texas buyers are working with whatever manufacturer pricing or incentives Tesla is running at the time of order. Local utility rebates for home charging equipment are a separate program from LDPLIP and aren’t affected by its funding status, so it’s worth checking with your utility directly rather than assuming a purchase-rebate program covers your charger install too.
