Because European law lets Tesla replace them with cameras, and U.S. law doesn’t — so Tesla actually built two different Semis.
Two countries, two sets of rules
In the United States, federal regulation FMVSS 111 requires physical mirrors on commercial trucks, which is why every U.S.-spec Tesla Semi still carries the familiar mirror arms. Europe has allowed camera-monitor systems in place of glass mirrors on trucks since 2016, and Tesla’s European Semi — unveiled at September 2026’s IAA Transportation show in Hannover, Germany — takes advantage of that by dropping mirrors entirely in favor of camera pods.
What the camera system actually does
The European Semi uses 10 external cameras to provide 360-degree coverage around the truck with no blind spots, feeding displays inside the cab instead of mirrors. Beyond visibility, removing the mirror arms also cuts aerodynamic drag — a real efficiency gain on a vehicle that spends most of its life at highway speed. Regulators don’t let this happen casually: European rules require the feeds to meet set standards for image quality, brightness, and latency, which has to stay under 200 milliseconds.
Only a European truck, for now
Deliveries of the European-spec Semi are targeted for 2027, and Tesla has made several other region-specific changes beyond the mirrors — separated headlights instead of the U.S. lightbar, rear wheel covers, and an escape ladder mounted in the cab, all to meet European commercial-vehicle codes. None of that changes what’s rolling around North America: U.S. Semis still need physical mirrors under current federal rules, so this is a Europe-only design for the foreseeable future, not a preview of a mirrorless Semi coming stateside.
