San Jose’s EV rebate drops after September 14. Here’s what that means for a Tesla.

If you’re buying a Tesla in San Jose, the next few days matter. San José Clean Energy’s EV Instant Rebate pays out at its current, higher rate only through September 14 — after that, the rebate drops for everyone who applies.

What’s changing

San José Clean Energy (SJCE), the city’s community-choice electricity provider, currently pays qualifying residents $4,000 toward a new EV or $2,000 toward a used one at participating dealerships. Starting September 15, those amounts fall to $3,000 for a new EV and $1,750 for a used one, and SJCE is adding a $50,000 vehicle price cap that didn’t apply before. Anyone who locks in a rebate code and completes their purchase or lease by September 14 still gets the current, higher amount.

Which Tesla trims still qualify

The $50,000 cap matters once it takes effect, because it rules out several current Tesla trims. A base Model 3 RWD lists for $36,990 (about $38,630 with destination and fees), and a base Model Y RWD starts at $41,380 with destination included, according to pricing tracked by EV Charging Stations and Cars.com — both comfortably under the cap. Step up to a Model Y Premium AWD ($51,380) or Performance ($59,380), a Model 3 Performance ($54,490), a Model Y L, or a Cybertruck, and you’re over the line once the cap applies. If you want one of those pricier configurations and this rebate, that’s another reason to close before September 15.

Who’s eligible, and how it’s applied

SJCE’s rebate is limited to its own service territory — San José customers — and is applied at participating dealerships rather than claimed later as a tax credit, so ask your delivery advisor or dealer directly whether it can be applied to your order before you sign. Income-qualifying households enrolled in programs like CARE, FERA, or Clean Cars for All can stack this with other state and utility incentives for larger total savings, though the instant-rebate amount itself is what’s changing this week.

With the federal EV purchase credit gone for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, local programs like this one are increasingly where the real, present-tense savings are — and, as with most of them, the terms can move with little notice. Confirm the current amount directly with SJCE before you finalize an order.
