Tesla lets you hand a car to someone else entirely through the app, but that’s a different action from just letting them drive it — and either way, your state’s DMV still wants its own paperwork.
Transfer ownership, or just add a driver?
These are two different things in the Tesla app, and mixing them up matters. Adding a driver gives someone access to use the car — they can precondition it, use Sentry Mode, schedule service, and unlock it with the app — but they never become the owner, and you can add up to five drivers per vehicle this way. Drivers can’t add or remove other drivers, manage payment methods, or see charging history. If you actually want someone else to own the car outright, that’s a full ownership transfer, a separate flow that removes it from your account for good.
How the app transfer works
According to a step-by-step walkthrough published in February 2026, the seller starts by confirming the recipient already has a Tesla Account and the app installed, then opens the app and goes to My Products, selects the vehicle, and chooses “Remove or Transfer Ownership.” After entering the recipient’s account email and waiting for them to accept, the car disappears from the original owner’s account. The recipient signs in with the same email, accepts the transfer, and sets up their own payment method, phone key, and driver profile. When both sides complete the flow correctly, the transfer can go through in under a day; if Tesla has to manually review documents instead, plan on three to five business days.
The DMV part doesn’t go away
The app transfer only moves the car inside Tesla’s system — it doesn’t touch your state’s title and registration records. You’ll still need the signed title, a bill of sale, current registration, and photo ID to make the new owner legal in the eyes of your state, and any sales or gift tax rules that normally apply to a car changing hands still apply here. Requirements and fees vary by state, so it’s worth checking your state DMV’s site for its specific gift-transfer or family-transfer process before you hand over the keys.
