A cheap pair of camera covers has become a popular fix for a specific Tesla annoyance: FSD and Autopilot losing track of your blind spots the moment it starts raining.
The problem it’s aimed at
Tesla’s side repeater cameras, mounted low near the mirrors, cover the blind-spot zone that lane-change assist and FSD rely on. In heavy rain, water collects on the curved housing around those cameras and Tesla’s software can throw a “Camera Visibility Limited” warning that disables or degrades lane-change features until the view clears — a known limitation of the hardware-4 camera housing design. Tesla’s own release notes have addressed the warning message itself, telling drivers which camera is affected, but the underlying water-on-lens problem in hard rain is a hardware quirk, not something a software update alone fixes.
What the cover actually does
RepeaterShield, a $29.99 accessory from Abstract Ocean, is a small aerodynamic cover that clips over each side repeater camera on hardware-4 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles (it’s not compatible with older hardware-3 cars). According to the manufacturer’s product listing, the shape uses airflow at highway speed to direct rain away from the lens rather than let it pool on the housing, and installation takes a couple of minutes per side using included adhesive and prep wipes. The listing cites over 18 months of testing across different weather conditions and notes the covers don’t require any car wash restriction beyond a seven-day adhesive cure period.
One tester’s results
Dirty Tesla, who regularly tests FSD hardware and software changes, posted a hands-on look at RepeaterShield on September 16, 2026.
His video shows one owner’s experience installing and driving with the covers, not an independent lab test — Tesla hasn’t endorsed or evaluated third-party camera covers, so treat any claims about how much they help FSD’s rain performance as the manufacturer’s and the reviewer’s word, not confirmed by Tesla.
