Edmunds put the 2027 Tesla Model Y L AWD through its real-world range test and got 358 miles on a single charge — 11.8% farther than Tesla’s own 320-mile estimate, and the longest range Edmunds has recorded for any Model Y.
What Edmunds actually measured
Edmunds runs its own standardized range test instead of relying on the EPA sticker number, driving each car on a fixed loop until the battery is empty. The Model Y L AWD, riding on 20-inch Uberhelix wheels, averaged 25.1 kWh per 100 miles and covered 358 miles before running out, beating Tesla’s internal 320-mile estimate by nearly 36 miles, according to TeslaNorth’s coverage of the test. That’s despite the Model Y L weighing roughly 300 pounds more than the standard Long Range AWD, thanks to its longer wheelbase, third row, and larger battery pack.
How it stacks up against the rest of the Model Y lineup
The result puts the three-row Model Y L ahead of every other current Model Y trim Edmunds has tested: the rear-wheel-drive Model Y came in at 337 miles, the standard Long Range AWD at 327 miles, and the Performance trim at 293 miles, per Not a Tesla App’s summary of the results. Tesla credits a lower coefficient of drag — 0.216, slightly better than the standard Model Y — along with the redesigned wheels and a glass roof that lets in about 30% less solar energy for improved thermal efficiency.
What this means for planning a trip
A single test result isn’t a guarantee of what you’ll get in your own driving. Edmunds’ test is run under specific conditions, and real-world range still swings with speed, outside temperature, and how much you’re carrying. But for owners cross-shopping the three-row Model Y L against the standard five-seat trims, it’s a useful data point: the extra size and weight of the L doesn’t come with a shorter driving range, at least on Edmunds’ test loop. If you’re planning a road trip in a Model Y L, treat 358 miles as a best-case number and plan charging stops around the range estimate shown in your car rather than this test result.
