Tesla’s new Emergency Drive Away feature lets you leave a Supercharger plugged in

· 2 min read

A software update rolling out now adds a way to drive off from a Supercharger without unplugging first, built for situations where staying put isn’t safe.

What the feature does

Tesla’s 2026.38.3 software update removes the lockout that normally keeps a Tesla from shifting into Drive while it’s plugged into a Supercharger. Shift into Drive anyway, and the touchscreen shows a warning; hold the brake pedal and tap “Activate” to override it and pull away immediately, cable and all.

The feature is live at every US Supercharger with no new hardware required, and covers most current Tesla models. Model S and Model X units built before 2021 aren’t supported, and the feature is limited to the US for now.

Why Tesla added it

Tesla built Emergency Drive Away after owners asked for a way to escape an active threat without stopping to unplug first — a direct response to the August 1 shooting at a Supercharger station in Twin Falls, Idaho, which killed three people and injured seven, some of whom were charging nearby at the time.

What it actually costs you

This isn’t a convenience feature, and Tesla is explicit that using it causes real damage. Its in-car warning reads: “Intended for emergency use only. Use of this feature will damage your vehicle and the Supercharger. Deliberate misuse will invoke additional penalties.” Repairing the electrical and civil damage to the Supercharger itself can run up to $25,000, and your own charge port and charge port door run roughly $350 each to replace — none of it covered by warranty.

Tesla has said it will keep supporting Model S and Model X software “for as long as people own the vehicles”, a commitment it made when it announced the end of Model S/X production back in January 2026 — worth keeping in mind given the pre-2021 exclusion above if you own an older one.
