Tesla and SpaceX have started site work on Terafab, a semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas that the companies say will be the largest building on Earth by floor area once complete. The project matters to Tesla owners less for its size than for what it’s built to produce: the compute chips behind the company’s self-driving hardware.
What’s actually being built
The companies committed an initial $16.8 billion to the project, with plans that could eventually reach $119 billion in combined SpaceX and Tesla investment, according to TechCrunch’s report on the announcement. At more than 100 million square feet, Terafab is planned to be over five times larger than the current record-holder for the world’s biggest building. Tesla and SpaceX say the facility will manufacture chips optimized for edge computing and inference — the kind of on-device processing self-driving cars and robots need to make decisions without a round trip to a data center.
Why it’s relevant to your Tesla
TechCrunch reports the companies specifically named two Tesla products as intended customers for Terafab’s output: Optimus, the humanoid robot program, and Cybercab, Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi. A dedicated domestic chip supply could eventually reduce the kind of supply constraints that have slowed hardware rollouts in the past — though Terafab’s own construction timeline runs years, not months, so it won’t affect the FSD hardware already in cars on the road today.
