Delaware residents ordering a new Tesla can get up to $2,500 back through the state’s Clean Vehicle Rebate, on top of whatever Tesla itself charges.
How much you actually get
The Delaware Clean Vehicle Rebate pays $2,500 toward a new all-electric vehicle with a base MSRP under $40,000, and $1,500 for a base MSRP between $40,000 and $50,000. Anything priced above $50,000 doesn’t qualify. According to the program’s list of eligible vehicles, current Model 3 (2023–2026) and Model Y (2020–2026) both land in the $2,500 tier. Model S and Model X only qualify at that tier for 2018–2020 model years — trims Tesla no longer builds — so a new Model S or X bought today doesn’t get anything from this program.
No income cap, but a real deadline
Unlike some state programs, Delaware doesn’t ask about your income to qualify. What it does require is timing: you have to submit your rebate application within 90 days of taking delivery, and payments typically take 8 to 10 weeks after approval. The program applies to vehicles purchased or leased on or after May 1, 2026, and Delaware says it will reevaluate the program’s terms again in 2027 — so the $2,500 figure isn’t guaranteed to hold beyond this program year.
Why this matters more now
The federal EV tax credit ended for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025, which means a state rebate like Delaware’s is one of the few purchase incentives left for a Tesla buyer here. It’s a point-of-sale-adjacent rebate rather than an instant discount — you pay full price at delivery, then apply for the $2,500 or $1,500 afterward — so budget for the full purchase price up front and treat the rebate as reimbursement, not a discount Tesla applies at checkout.
If you’re also installing a Level 2 charger at home, Delaware runs a separate EV charging equipment rebate program through DNREC — worth checking before you pay an electrician, since it’s a distinct application from the vehicle rebate.
