Factors

What affects range.

Temperature

Cold weather (<32°F) can reduce range by 20–40%. Heat pump models recover most of this when cabin is preheated while plugged in.

Speed

Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of velocity. Driving 75 mph vs 65 mph cuts range by ~15%.

Terrain

Elevation gain draws from the battery. Regenerative braking recovers most of that energy on the descent.

HVAC & accessories

Climate control pulls 1–5 kW. Seat heaters are far more efficient than cabin heat for staying warm.

FAQ

Range questions.

How much range does a Tesla lose in winter?

Expect 15–30% less than the EPA figure on cold days, and more on very short trips where the pack and cabin never warm up. Preconditioning while plugged in and using seat heaters instead of cabin heat recover a good share of it.

Why is my real-world range lower than the EPA rating?

The EPA cycle averages below 50 mph. Highway speed is the largest everyday factor: aerodynamic drag grows with the square of speed, so 75 mph instead of 65 mph costs roughly 10–15% of range. Cold, climate control, hills and a heavy foot stack on top.

Which Tesla has the longest range in 2026?

The Model 3 Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, at 363 miles EPA-estimated, followed by the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive at 357 miles. Cybertruck trims are rated at 320–325 miles.
