Tesla wants to sell you car insurance in Washington. Here’s what’s proposed.

· 2 min read

Tesla has filed to launch its own auto insurance program in Washington state, with a proposed effective date of September 1, 2026 — a date that has already passed without public confirmation the program is live, so treat it as pending until Tesla or the state confirms otherwise. If approved, Washington would become the 16th state where Tesla sells insurance directly to its own drivers, according to Not a Tesla App’s review of the filing.

What’s different about the Washington filing

The filing outlines two separate scoring tracks. A standard Safety Score works the way it already does in other states, tracking things like hard braking and aggressive turns. A second score, built for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) users, automatically credits FSD-engaged miles as if they were driven at a perfect Safety Score, and drivers who put more than half their monthly miles on FSD (Supervised) could see an added discount on top of that, according to filing details reported by Not a Tesla App and corroborated by Basenor’s coverage of the same filing. Tesla General Insurance — the company’s own underwriting arm — is behind the Washington filing.

Why this matters if you own a Tesla in Washington

Right now, Washington Tesla owners buy coverage the same way any other driver does — through a traditional insurer, sometimes at a premium because EV parts and repair costs can run higher. If the state approves Tesla’s filing, owners here would get access to the same behavior-based pricing model that’s lowered bills for Safety-Score-conscious drivers elsewhere, especially anyone who already uses FSD (Supervised) regularly. But state approval isn’t guaranteed on any particular timeline — insurance regulators can take months to sign off, and Tesla’s own past filings have shifted their start dates before.

Don’t cancel or let a current policy lapse in anticipation of a Tesla policy that isn’t confirmed live yet. Washington’s insurance filings are public through the state Office of the Insurance Commissioner, and Tesla typically confirms availability in the Insurance tab of the Tesla app once a state actually goes live.
