Do you need snow chains for your Tesla? Here’s when the law actually requires them.
Most Tesla owners never put chains on. If you live somewhere with mild winters and stick to plowed roads, you can skip this purchase entirely. But if you drive mountain passes in winter, even occasionally, chains can become a legal requirement, not just a safety option. Here’s how to tell which camp you’re in, and what to buy if you need them.
When are chains actually required?
Several western states post chain-control laws on mountain highways during winter storms. In California, Caltrans posts three chain-control levels on affected routes: R-1 requires chains on most vehicles except passenger cars and light trucks running snow tires on two drive wheels; R-2 exempts only four-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels; R-3 requires chains on everything, no exceptions. R-1 and R-2 are the ones you’re most likely to hit on routes like I-80 over Donner Summit.
Colorado works differently. Its Passenger Vehicle Traction Law is active every winter on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison and can be triggered elsewhere during storms. It requires at least 3/16-inch tread depth on tires rated for winter, all-weather, or mud-and-snow use, on all-wheel or four-wheel-drive vehicles. If your tires don’t meet that standard, you need chains or an approved alternative traction device on two or more drive tires. When conditions worsen further, the state can escalate to a Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, which requires chains or an approved device on every vehicle regardless of drivetrain. Fines for ignoring an active traction or chain law start at $100 plus a surcharge, and climb sharply if you end up blocking traffic.
Oregon, Washington, and other mountain states run similar systems. The rule of thumb: if you’re driving a mountain pass in snow country between roughly November and April, check that state’s DOT traffic conditions page before you go, not after you’re stuck behind a chain checkpoint.
What Tesla says about chains
Tesla’s chain guidance varies by model and wheel size, and clearance in the wheel well is the limiting factor — a wheel-and-tire combination that has room for chains on one setup may not on another. Tesla does not publish a single blanket answer that covers every wheel option across every model. Before you buy anything, check your specific vehicle’s compatibility on Tesla’s support site or in your owner’s manual, and don’t assume a chain that fits one Tesla configuration fits yours.
Cable chains vs. traditional link chains
If your car is chain-compatible, the type you buy matters. Tesla wheel wells run tight, and tire-chain buying guides consistently point to that clearance gap as the deciding factor: traditional heavy-link chains are built for trucks and larger SUVs with more room between the tire and the wheel well, while cable-style chains use a thinner, low-profile design made for cars with limited clearance. For most Tesla sedans and crossovers, cable chains are the safer starting point. Fabric-and-rubber traction devices (often called snow socks) are another low-clearance option worth comparing if your wheel well is especially tight.
Buying and using chains, in short
Buy chains sized to your actual tire dimensions, not your car’s model name — check the sidewall of your tire for the exact size. Practice installing them at home before you need them on the shoulder of a mountain highway in the dark. Chain-control zones typically post reduced speed limits around 25 to 30 mph, and chains are meant to come off again once you’re back on clear pavement — running them on dry roads wears both the chains and your tires unnecessarily.
The bottom line
If you never drive in snow, skip chains altogether. If you occasionally cross a mountain pass in winter, keep a compatible set in the frunk or trunk and know your state’s chain-control rules before the season starts. Early September is a good time to check your wheel and tire setup against Tesla’s current compatibility guidance, rather than finding out at a checkpoint that your car can’t legally proceed.
