Total cost of ownership
Sold in California

Tesla Insurance is sold in California

California doesn't allow behavior-based pricing, so Tesla's policy here is priced conventionally. It is still worth a quote in the Tesla app.

Before you buy a policy

  • Get at least three real quotes before delivery. For the same driver and car, the cheapest and dearest carriers in insurance.com's survey were more than twice apart.
  • A higher deductible lowers the premium, but it is what you pay after a claim. Glass and bumper repairs on a Tesla often run past $1,000.
  • Bundling with home or renters insurance is the discount most often left unclaimed.
Annual premium$4,442

Method

How this is calculated

Each estimate starts from insurance.com's 2026 average premium for your model in your state, then multiplies it by five factors: trim, age, driving record, deductible and mileage. Liability-only coverage starts from the model's liability-to-full-coverage ratio and skips the trim and deductible factors. The five-year figure is one year's premium times five.

State

The biggest single factor. A Model Y averages $1,992 a year in Hawaii and $6,247 in Louisiana, for the same driver and coverage.

Age

An 18-year-old pays about 2.9 times what a 40-year-old does, a 25-year-old about 18% more. Rates bottom out around 60, then rise again: a 75-year-old pays about 6% more than at 40.

Driving record

A speeding ticket adds about 34%, an at-fault accident about 53%, a DUI about 90%.

Coverage and deductible

Liability-only costs about 30% of full coverage, but no lender allows it. With full coverage, a $1,000 deductible saves about 11% against $500; a $250 deductible costs about 10% more.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How much does Tesla insurance cost?

Insurance.com's April 2026 survey puts the national average for full coverage at $3,871 a year for a Model 3, $3,836 for a Model Y and $4,415 for a Cybertruck, for a 40-year-old with a clean record and good credit. Liability-only coverage averages about $1,139. Your state moves it most: the same Model Y averages $1,992 in Hawaii and $6,247 in Louisiana.

Is a Model 3 or a Model Y cheaper to insure?

They are within about 1% nationally ($3,871 against $3,836), and which is cheaper flips from state to state. Trim matters more than model: a Performance costs roughly 5% more to insure than a Premium, and a Standard a little less. Cybertruck averages about 15% more than a Model Y.

Is Tesla Insurance cheaper?

Often, for careful drivers. Tesla Insurance is sold in 15 states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia) and, everywhere except California, prices each month on the car's Safety Score rather than on credit or history. Compare a Tesla Insurance quote in the app with two conventional quotes before delivery.

How much does a ticket or an accident raise the premium?

In insurance.com's studies, one speeding ticket raises full-coverage rates by about 34%, two tickets by 60%, an at-fault accident with over $2,000 of damage by 53% and a first DUI by 90%. Most surcharges fall away after three to five years.

Sources and assumptions

Estimates, not quotes. State averages: insurance.com (updated 2026-04-10; 40-year-old driver, good credit, clean record, 100/300/100 liability, $500 deductibles, 10,000 miles a year). Age: insurance.com rates by age (April 2026). Record: insurance.com violation studies (2025). Deductible: Bankrate (January 2025). Mileage: insure.com (April 2026). Credit, ZIP code and carrier choice move real quotes further than any of these.
