Maine’s low-income EV rebate bonus expires September 30. Here’s what a Tesla buyer gets.
If you’re a low-income Maine resident planning to buy a Tesla, a $1,000 bonus on the state’s EV rebate goes away after September 30, 2026. Miss the deadline and the rebate is still worth having — it just drops back to its standard amount.
What the rebate actually pays
Through Efficiency Maine’s low-income EV program, an eligible buyer can get $8,000 toward a new all-electric vehicle or $4,000 toward a used one. Both figures already include the $1,000 bonus, which the program’s page says expires September 30, 2026.
Who qualifies
The income test is based on participation in an assistance program: Efficiency Maine requires that a household member be enrolled in MaineCare, HEAP, SNAP, or TANF, verified with an income letter from the program. There’s also a catch that trips people up: you need an off-peak Level 2 charger with Wi-Fi installed at the vehicle’s regular parking spot, and Efficiency Maine’s guidance is that the charger has to be purchased before the vehicle to unlock the vehicle incentive, with installation completed within 90 days of the car purchase.
Does a Tesla qualify?
Tesla is one of the manufacturers Efficiency Maine lists as eligible for this direct-purchase rebate, alongside Polestar, Slate, and Rivian. But there’s a price ceiling: new vehicles can’t exceed $55,000 MSRP (pickups and vans get an $80,000 cap), and used vehicles are capped at a $50,000 purchase price.
That cap matters more than it might seem. As of an October 2025 pricing breakdown, the Model 3 Standard starts at $36,990 and the Model Y Standard at $39,990 — both comfortably under the cap. Move up the lineup and it gets tighter: Model 3 Performance AWD lists at $54,990, just under the line, while Model Y Performance AWD lists at $57,490 — over it. Pricing shifts over time, so check the exact MSRP of the trim you’re ordering against the $55,000 cap before assuming it qualifies, rather than assuming every Model 3 or Model Y makes the cut.
The bottom line
If you qualify on income and can get the off-peak charger installed first, applying before September 30 is worth an extra $1,000. After that date, the rebate doesn’t disappear — it just reverts to its pre-bonus amount, so there’s no need to rush into a purchase you’re not ready for just to hit the deadline.
